The delay in deploying the flying bomb was principally due to predictable difficulties in fine-tuning and mass producing the weapon. Launching began, as soon as sufficient missiles were available, during the early hours of June 13th 1944. Even so, the opening shots in this sinister and innovative campaign came close to fiasco. Only ten missiles were launched that night, five crashed near their launch sites, one fell harmlessly into the Channel and four reached England. A temporary halt was called for two days; the German commander, Colonel Max Wachtel only escaping Court Martial on the grounds of the hopeless supply situation.

This ineffective start had given the sceptics in Whitehall cause for misplaced self-congratulation. When firings restarted at 11.16pm on the 15th June it was by salvo from all 55 operational sites. The first missile fell on London at 11.40pm and by noon the following day 73 bombs had reached the capital.

The flying bomb - proper designation Fi 103, since the airframe was designed by the firm of Fieseler, was essentially the product of a political race for survival. Experiments with wire-guided missiles had been well advanced during the First World War, but had to continue in secret after 1918. Some contemporary development of remote-controlled aircraft had also been undertaken by Fritz Gosslau, a designer of radio-controlled target drones. He saw the potential for a flying bomb, but had to wait until 1936 when, after graduating in aeronautical engineering, he joined the Argus Engine Company.

By October 1939 official interest in his work had increased and without waiting for approval, Argus and Gosslau began development of their latest proposal - 'Fernfauer', a kind of pilotless stand-off weapon requiring a chase plane to signal the moment of bomb release. Funding for this project, however, was refused - the principle objection being that the weapon was too slow. Powered by an Argus piston engine, the top speed was only 280mph. Despite some persistent pleading the project was dropped. Restoration, however, would quickly follow.

Although it originated as a completely separate project, the development by Argus of a pulse jet, an avenue of research requested by the Airforce in 1939 when it was realised that conventional piston engines would soon reach their maximum potential, very neatly solved the objection about the speed of their pilotless aircraft. The pulse jet is a primitive jet engine that works on the principle of forcing air through a narrow tube. It offers high power and simple construction and whilst avoiding the use of scarce materials, only requires standard gasoline fuel to power it. At first development was delayed by difficulties with control of the air supply to the engine. Dr. Paul Schmidt had built a working pulse jet in the 1920's to prove the principle and the Argus scientists now appropriated Schmidt's air valve system, the one missing component required for success.

The concept of a pilotless missile was now complete and the Fieseler company were invited to collaborate in the design of the airframe. This exciting and futuristic package was submitted to the Air Ministry on 28th April 1942, exactly one month after the devastating attack on the German medieval city of Lubeck by the RAF. The new weapon was immediately seized upon by the German Airforce in their desperation to regain some credibility in the face of their apparent impotence to deal with the growing threat from Allied bombing. The revenge myth surrounding the flying bomb began to form, but it was to take two more years before its mystical reputation could be put to the test.

Flying over the channel at a height varying between one and eight thousand feet, the Fi-103 and it's one ton warhead presented the defenders with an excruciatingly difficult target. Fortunately the enforced crudities of mass-production had meant that the weapon was not quite achieving it's design speed. From a launch velocity of about 340mph, speed would gradually increase as fuel was consumed until by the end of it's run the missile had attained nearer 400mph. At low level this was still an embarrassingly high speed even for the latest generation of piston-engined aircraft assigned to the defence.

The redeployment of the anti-aircraft guns to the south east coast quickly brought its reward, especially when supplies of the latest American radar sets and proximity shell fuses became available; but not before the counter-attack against the flying bomb had created a reputation for another new and highly effective participant - the Hawker Tempest.

A savage and refined killer, this aircraft combined aerodynamic sophistication with a brute of an engine - the Napier Sabre. The thrilling sight and sound of an airworthy Hawker Tempest is unlikely to be experienced again. Flying for pleasure is not a term that fits comfortably with many of the last generation of piston-engined aircraft. Although the Tempest was built solely for war it nevertheless represents probably the ultimate in the wartime requirement for a fast, heavily armed and robust fighter for low-level interdiction operations in support of the invasion and to disrupt enemy supply lines and troop movements. Fully combat-manoeuvrable at speeds in excess of 500mph the Tempest was extremely fast at low-level and provided its pilot with a perfectly stable firing platform. Based at Newchurch, the Tempest Wing, comprising Nos. 3, 486 and 56 Squadrons, destroyed a total of 638 flying bombs in the eighty critical days of the battle from 16th June 1944.

Shortly after the start of the campaign, however, the defenders were to find themselves joined by a sensational newcomer. Onto this stage had stepped an aircraft that represented nothing less than the herald of a new age in flight. The Gloster Meteor was the embodiment of one man's vision. Its revolutionary engine had been designed, tested and perfected under the guidance of a serving RAF officer, Frank Whittle. The operational debut of the jet-propelled Meteor had for the moment, passed its originator by. The effort and sacrifice of the preceeding years had, not for the first time, shattered his health and he lay, unaware, in a hospital bed. In a condition so serious in fact that for a while his doctor had forbidden all visitors.

In time the world would acknowledge his unique achievement, but the story of the jet engine is more than just an inventors tale since it contains an example of purity of purpose and selfless devotion to inspire us all.

For all its breathtaking speed, however, the Mk.1 Meteor could not claim to represent a quantum leap forward in terms of aerodynamics. A backward step in fact, thought some, pointing to the lack of endurance, the glacial accceleration when compared to piston engined aircraft and its constant tendency to wander or snake in the air -a feature of many early jets. This made for poor aiming and not suprisingly the Meteor struggled against the flying bomb, only accounting for 13 destroyed. But all its deficiencies were as nothing when enjoying the fast smooth and vibration free experience of flying Britain's first operational jet. Suddenly flying had been rediscovered and nobody was about to question the fact that the jet engine had, at a stroke, utterly conquered the aero-engine world.

Although it has been sixty years or so since Frank Whittle's project began to take shape, some of the most prominent characters have only recently departed. It should also be remembered that work on the jet engine was highly classified during the war and the 1980's produced several updated accounts of the 'true story' after previously witheld information had been released. To some extent therefore it is only now becoming possible to take a detatched historical view of this fascinating story. Of particular interest is the important part played by the BTH in Rugby, at least until the first flights of the experimental E28/39 which flew with an engine built there. It must be a cause for regret that our town has not made more of the Whittle connection. A more worthy example of triumph over adversity would be difficult to find.

More about Sir Frank Whittle

Benn Hall - 01788 541516

BT Fault Line - 0800 800151

Cineworld - 0871 2208000

Draycote Water - 01788 811107

Electricity (Power Loss) - 08457 331331

Gas Emergency - 0800 111999

Guideposts - 02476 385880

National Blood Service - 0300 1232323

National Rail Enquires - 08457 484950

NHS Direct - 0845 46 47

Police (non emergency) - 01788 541111

Royal British Legion - 01788 567457

Rugby Age Concern - 01788 552542

Rugby Are Gallery & Museum - 01788 533201

Rugby Borough Council - 01788 533533

Rugby Library - 01788 533250

Rugby Minds - 01788 544105

Rugby NHS Primary Care - 01926 493491

Rugby Radio 107.1FM - 0845 0949771

Rugby Theatre - 01788 541234

Rugby Tourist Info.- 01788 533217

Servern Trent Water - 0800 7834444

St Cross Hospital - 01788 572831

St Cross Hospital Radio - 01788 545271

Stagecoach Warkshire - 01788 535555

Volunteer Centre Rugby - 01788 561293

Warwickshire Childcare Information Service - 0845 0908044 or 01926 742274

Warwickshire Comm and Voluntary Action (WCAVA) Rugby - 01788 574258

Sir Norman Lockyer

One of the more esoteric aspects of Rugby’s heritage must surely be its blue plaques marking buildings of interest. His full name was Sir Joseph Norman Lockyer.

His father was Joseph Hooley Lockyer, a surgeon-apothecary, and his mother was Anne Norman, a daughter of Edward Norman, the Squire of Cosford. After a conventional schooling supplemented by travel in Switzerland and France, he took up his first job as a civil servant in the English War Office in 1857. In 1858 he married Winifrid James and subsequently settled in Wimbledon , South London. Lockyer was a man of wide interests and soon established himself as a keen amateur astronomer with a particular interest in the sun. His striking success as an amateur led, via a period of temporary service as secretary of the Duke of Devonshire’s commission on scientific instruction, to a permanent post under the Science and Art Department, which culminated in his appointment as director of the Solar Physics Observatory established at South Kensington, London. There he remained until 1911, when the observatory was transferred to Cambridge, whereupon he retired. After this he established an observatory near his home in Salcombe Regis, Devonshire, known at first as the Hill Observatory and after his death as the Norman Lockyer Observatory - an institution now attached to the University of Exeter.

The uses of the spectroscope as an analytical tool were being realised in the middle of the 19th century. In 1859 Kirchoff and Bunsen used it to show how the composition of heavenly bodies could be determined, and Lockyer soon obtained one and attached it to his 6¼ inch telescope. On 20th October 1868 he had his first success by observing the solar prominences at a time other than an eclipse. This depended on the possibility of using a dispersion large enough to weaken the spectrum of the diffused sunlight in the atmosphere sufficiently to make visible the bright lines of the prominence spectrum. Lockyer had actually conceived the idea as early as 1866, but was delayed in obtaining a satisfactory instrument. As it happened, on 18th August 1868 a total eclipse of the sun was visible in India, at which the brilliance of the prominence spectrum lines suggested to Jules Janssen, who observed them, the same idea that had occurred to Lockyer two years before; and on the following day he successfully applied it. Both Lockyer and Janssen transmitted the news of the discovery to a meeting of the French Academy of Sciences, and by a remarkable coincidence the messages were received within a few minutes of each other. The French government commemorated the event by striking a medal bearing the portraits of the two astronomers.

Following up on the observations, Lockyer observed a yellow line in the prominence spectrum which suggested to him the existence in the sun of an unknown element, which he named Helium from the Greek word Helios meaning Sun. The general opinion at the time was that the line was due to a familiar element under exceptional conditions of excitation. In 1895 Sir William Ramsay, who had been studying the inert residues in atmospheric nitrogen and who had already isolated the gas Argon, succeeded in isolating another inert gas. Spectroscopic analysis of this confirmed it as being the same element as that previously identified by Lockyer as Helium.

By 1869 Lockyer was applying to the gases within sunspots the principles of Doppler regarding changes in wavelength caused by the movement of their source. The high velocities he discovered led him to speculate on the movements of gases and the transfer of heat in the sun.

Two of Lockyer’s more striking and controversial theories were eventually shown to be incorrect, but are nonetheless notable for the way in which their concepts anticipated the direction that modern science was to take.

The first of these was his "Dissociation Hypothesis". Lockyer was perplexed by the absence of certain metallic absorption lines in the solar spectrum. The general view at the time was that the spectrum of any element was an invariable characteristic of the atoms or molecules of the element itself, although it was recognised that for the same element the spectra of atoms and of molecules differed. (Gases in particular exist in the form of molecules in their elemental state). However, Lockyer observed in his experiments that the spectrum of an element varied with the intensity of the stimulus used to produce it. Lockyer postulated that a stimulus greater than that necessary to break up the molecules into atoms would break up the atoms themselves and produce sub-atoms having their own characteristic spectra. Lockyer believed himself able to observe that the spectra of different elements contained lines in common, and he therefore hypothesised that the atoms of the elements were themselves groupings of smaller constituents, the common lines being due to such constituents obtained by the dissociation of atoms of different elements.

The greater accuracy of measurement now possible has shown Lockyers supposed observation of coincidences of lines from different elements to be illusory. Although each element can yield a series of spectra under continuously increasing stimulus, these are all different from any other spectrum that can be produced from anything at all. However, it is nevertheless correct that an increase in the energy of the stimulus does indeed produce a dissociation of the atoms, and that atoms of different elements are indeed composed of different associations of the same more elementary components. While in itself incorrect, Lockyer’s hypothesis certainly anticipates electron theory.

The second was his Meteoritic Hypothesis. Lockyer witnessed the very striking meteoritic display of 1866, which appears to have left him predisposed to give special attention to meteorites when he began to speculate on the possibility of determining the course of celestial evolution in the light of spectroscopic evidence. In his own words:

“All self-luminous bodies in the celestial spaces are composed either of swarms of meteorites or of masses of meteoritic vapour produced by heat.”

A startling observation by modern standards, Lockyer nonetheless developed this into a comprehensive scheme for the inorganic evolution of the universe. In the beginning space was occupied by a more or less uniform distribution of meteorites which, through their rapid motion and chance collisions, tended to accumulate in groups. These developed in various ways according to the conditions, giving rise to the various types of heavenly body observed. Very large groups would constitute nebulae, within which further condensations would occur destined to become stars. A star, beginning as a meteoritic swarm, would rise in temperature as it condensed, until a stage was reached at which the mass, then completely vaporised, would lose heat by radiation at a rate equal to its generation by condensation; thereafter it would cool down toward its final state as a cold solid body. An exceptionally rapid conglomeration would constitute a supernova, or new star, of which Lockyer examined some specimens that appeared during his working life; it would rise rapidly to its maximum temperature, and then decline in the normal stellar manner. The final state of the universe would be that of a number of cold, dark bodies moving about aimlessly forever.

Lockyer’s interpretation of his observations in this matter were insufficiently critical and discerning and it is not surprising that the conclusions he reached failed to convince the more critical of his contemporaries. One of the most striking features of the hypothesis, however, and one which aroused some of the strongest opposition, was its implication that a star began as a cold body, rose to a maximum temperature, and then cooled down again, so that the coolest stars observable belonged to two groups, young and old. It was generally held that stars were born hot and cooled continuously throughout their lives. It is a striking fact the theory of stellar evolution advanced by Henry Norris Russell and widely accepted required just such a life history so far as temperature and density were concerned. Though this had no connection with the meteoritic hypothesis, the partial vindication of his ideas gave Lockyer great satisfaction in his closing years. The fact that the whole problem now appears much more complex than either Lockyer or Russell could have conceived does not detract from the value of their work as a stimulus to further progress.

Lockyer also occupied himself with the astronomical interpretation of eastern temples and prehistoric stone circles in the British Isles, considering that these structures were connected with sun and star worship due to their orientation being toward the points of rising or setting of conspicuous heavenly bodies. He therefore set about dating the erection of such things, since the knowledge of the procession of the equinoxes enabled him to determine the precise azimuths of such risings and settings at different epochs and the point at which the star would align itself exactly with the temple axis. More cautious archaeologists were sceptical and considered the erosion of the visible horizon over several millennia to be too much to give the method much validity.

Just as Lockyer’s speculations aroused either enthusiastic support or, more often, violent dissent, but never indifference, so did his person: he had devoted friends and implacable enemies. His effect on the course of science is impossible to assess, but it is undoubtedly greater than the fate of his particular speculations would suggest. Perhaps his most lasting achievement was his creation of the scientific journal Nature, which he edited from its beginning in 1869 until 1919.

A Note on the Properties of Helium

In the classification of elements, helium belongs to the family known as the inert gases due to their reluctance to enter into any chemical reactions with anything else. One might therefore consider its discovery to be of very limited significance; but helium is significant for two reasons, both of which arise from the fact that it is not hydrogen.

The generally accepted theory of the origin of the universe is known as the “hot big bang” model. At the time of the big bang the universe is considered to have had zero size and therefore been infinitely hot. As it expanded, the temperature of the radiation would have decreased, so that after one second it would have fallen to about 10,000 million degrees - about a thousand times the temperature at the centre of the sun. At this point the elementary particles of matter, like photons and electrons, can be distinguished, as well as protons and neutrons - the particles that make up the nuclei of atoms. After about 100 seconds the temperature would have fallen to around 1000 million degrees - the temperature inside the hottest stars. At this temperature the energy possessed by protons and neutrons would have fallen to the point at which they could combine together and produce the nuclei of atoms of deuterium (heavy hydrogen), which contain one proton and one neutron. A few of these would be able to combine together to form atoms of two protons and two neutrons which are the nuclei of helium atoms. Spare neutrons would have decayed into protons, which are the nuclei of ordinary hydrogen atoms. A little while later the universe would have cooled to the point at which the nuclei could combine with electrons to form complete atoms. The early universe was therefore principally composed of hydrogen as the first and simplest element, with small amounts of helium as the next.

Over millions of years the rate of expansion of the universe would fall to the point at which the clouds of gas could begin to collapse under the effects of gravity. As the atoms started to collide with each other they started to heat up. Providing the quantity of hydrogen in the gas cloud was sufficient, the increasing contraction would cause nuclei of hydrogen to fuse together to form helium, with the release of enormous amounts of energy as heat and light. The release of the energy outwards would strike a balance with the force of gravity inwards to form a defined object which is, in fact, a star. Stars are therefore not the product of combustion, they are the product of nuclear fusion of hydrogen into helium, hence the presence of helium in our sun.

Eventually the supply of hydrogen is used up and the rate of fusion begins to slow down. This means that the star is less able to hold back the forces of gravity and it begins to contract. The temperature and pressure in the core rises to the point at which the helium itself begins to undergo fusion into heavier elements like carbon and oxygen. The heaviest element that can be produced by this stellar fusion is iron, and the amount of energy being given off by the procession of fusion reactions diminishes. The star therefore reaches a point of gravitational crisis. If it is sufficiently massive, the gravitational force is sufficient to overcome the repulsive forces that the nuclei have for each other at very close range. In a fraction of a second the core collapses to a few kilometres across at enormous density, pushing the outer gas away at speeds of up to 10,000 kilometres per second. This is the phenomenon of a spectacular supernova explosion, and these are the only events in the universe that can create elements heavier than iron. The gas cloud will eventually begin to contract again to form nebulae leading to the formation of a new star with the heavier fragments forming planets. It is the presence of heavy elements in the earth and solar system which identify our sun as at least a second generation star, formed from the debris of a super nova. Since the limit can be calculated for the minimum amount of gas needed to make a star which will eventually form a super nova, and also the time needed to reach this explosion point; and a calculation can likewise be made of the age of the sun, this will give a minimum figure for the age of the universe.

Hydrogen being the simplest element is much lighter than air, but it is also inflammable. Helium is also lighter than air, but produces much less lift. However, since it is also inert it has no vices such as inflammability. The early balloons and airships of the 20th century used hydrogen for their lift, but the disasters of the Hindenburg and the R101 sealed their fate for their use in carrying passengers. The fireball that engulfed the Hindenburg as it came in to land was at the time widely blamed on the hydrogen gas bags catching fire, although more recent research has suggested an alternative cause result from the discovery that the entire fabric was impregnated with aluminium powder. This highly combustible compound was ignited by static electricity due its being incompletely earthed. A limited number of small airships are still made and used around the world for things like aerial television, and all of which rely on helium for their lift. Although there have been suggestions of building another large passenger carrying airship using helium, so far one has not been built.

Helium is also the gas used for toy balloons that can be bought at fairs and carnivals. Because it is lighter than air it is also less dense, which means that sound waves travel through it faster than in air. A popular party trick is to undo the balloon, breathe in the helium and then talk. Since the sound waves of speech in the voice box are now carried by helium and not air, they speed up and produce an amusing squeaky voice. It should be noted that while helium is not in itself poisonous, it will nevertheless displace the air in the lungs and eventually stop the supply of oxygen to the blood stream. Inhalation of helium should therefore not be done for repeated breaths since it will ultimately produce suffocation. Those who are curious but less adventurous are instead advised to rent Woody Allen’s “Broadway Danny Rose” from the video shop. In one sequence Woody Allen and Mia Farrow are chased into an enormous hangar containing floating characters used for the annual St Patrick’s Day Parade. Presently shooting starts in which some of these helium filled balloons are punctured and helium leaks out. The dialogue between the characters thereupon rapidly degenerates into an absurd high pitched squeaking better suited to Loony Tunes.

SJC

Source: A Brief History of Time Stephen Hawking: Bantam Press 1988

Bibliography

Lockyer’s interests were extraordinarily wide.
